Matelica was one of the smaller papal fiefs permitted to strike local copper coinage, and 1797 was an exceptionally fraught moment to do so. French Revolutionary forces under Napoleon had been systematically dismantling papal temporal authority across the Legations since 1796, and the Treaty of Tolentino in February 1797 stripped Pius VI of Bologna, Ferrara, and the Romagna entirely. Local copper issues like this one effectively ceased within a year as the Roman Republic was proclaimed in 1798 and Pius VI was taken prisoner, dying in French captivity at Valence in 1799.
