Pius VI was captured by French Revolutionary forces in 1798 and died a prisoner in Valence the following year, making his later provincial copper issues — struck as the Papal States were collapsing under Napoleonic pressure — some of the last coinage produced under his authority. San Severino, a small Marche commune under papal jurisdiction, struck this piece in 1797, the same year French troops first occupied Rome and forced the Treaty of Tolentino, stripping the papacy of substantial territory and 30 million livres in indemnity.
