Issued to mark the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1987, a date of particular significance in Thai royal tradition — the completion of five 12-year cycles in the Buddhist calendar is considered an especially auspicious milestone, and the occasion prompted one of the largest ceremonial programs in modern Thai history. Bhumibol was already the world's longest-reigning monarch at the time of issue, having ascended in 1946.
