Issued as part of Afghanistan's post-Taliban monetary reconstruction, this coin entered circulation following the introduction of the new afghani in 2002 — a redenomination that replaced the catastrophically inflated old afghani at a rate of 1,000 to one. The 2004–2005 brass 5 afghani was among the first circulating coinage the country had seen in any stable sense for over two decades, minted during a period when the Karzai government was still consolidating basic institutional functions, including a functional central bank.
