Obverse description The obverse is printed in dark brownish-red on a light ground, with the numeral '5' and the denomination 'Afghanis' at upper centre within a guilloche border. To the left, a circular vignette contains the Afghan state emblem — a mosque with minaret flanked by wheat sheaves and a wreath. At right, an oval vignette presents a monument surrounded by a crowd. The central field carries a multi-line Dari-script promise-to-pay text with two manuscript signatures below, and the serial number appears in both Arabic-Indic and Eastern Arabic numerals at upper left and lower right.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in the same brownish-red ink and consists entirely of an intricate guilloche lathe-work design with large numeral '5' corner pieces at left and right. A central cartouche, framed by fine engine-turned rosette patterns and floral ornaments, carries two lines of Dari script. A decorative rosette watermark-like device appears in the upper right corner outside the main border.
