The Banque de l'Algérie operated under shifting political authority during the early 1940s — nominally under Vichy after the armistice, then under Allied administration following the November 1942 landings in North Africa. Notes of this series consequently circulated under two very different regimes within months of each other, which is why some examples turn up with overprints or cancellation stamps applied by the incoming Free French financial authorities.

Printing by the Banque de France in Paris places production firmly in the Vichy period. By late 1942, Allied control of Algeria made resupply from metropolitan France impossible, and subsequent high-denomination issues required entirely different printing arrangements.
