Stahlwerk Becker AG was a steel manufacturer in Willich, near Krefeld, that issued emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when the Reichsmark was collapsing fast enough that workers needed to be paid in scrip redeemable at company-affiliated vendors. Industrial firms across the Rhineland ran parallel currency systems that year simply to meet weekly payroll before the purchasing power evaporated.
The five-million Mark denomination places this note in the mid-phase of the collapse — by November 1923, comparable industrial notes were denominated in the tens of billions.
