Langquaid is a small market town in Lower Bavaria — the kind of municipality you would not expect to find issuing its own emergency currency. During the hyperinflation of 1923, German municipalities, savings institutions, and local authorities were legally permitted to issue Notgeld to plug the gap left by a central banking system that simply could not print fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. The Marktsparkasse Langquaid took that authorization and contracted Heinr. Schele in Regensburg, a regional printer capable of handling the volume.
By the time five-million-mark denominations were routine, the notes were often worth less than the paper they were printed on within days of issue.
