Lagerdorf, in Schleswig-Holstein, was the center of Germany's chalk extraction industry, and the municipality issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark collapsed so rapidly that local authorities couldn't wait for Berlin to supply adequate denominations. By mid-1923, five million marks was barely enough for a loaf of bread.
The watermark is worth noting on a local issue of this type — most municipal Notgeld of this period was printed on plain stock, and its presence here suggests the commune sourced paper from a commercial printer with proper security inventory rather than improvising.
