Theodor Reichardt's cocoa company in Wandsbek was one of hundreds of German commercial firms that resorted to printing their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank's output could not keep pace with denominations spiraling toward the astronomical. What makes Reichardt's notgeld unusual is that the company operated its own in-house print shop — the Hausdruckerei — which produced these notes on site rather than contracting out to one of the specialist security printers overwhelmed with municipal and corporate orders that year.
At 5,000,000 Mark, this note was already obsolete within weeks of issue.
