Mönchengladbach's Chamber of Commerce was among hundreds of regional bodies authorised to issue Notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time five-million-mark denominations were necessary for ordinary transactions, the notes were often worth less on arrival than the paper and ink used to produce them.

Schott A.G. in nearby Rheydt handled the printing — a short-run commercial job, not a specialist security press. The embossed seal was the primary authentication device, a low-cost measure that local issuers favored precisely because it required no additional print pass.
