Obverse description Typeset Notgeld issue on cream paper with a vertical green guilloche underprint band at left bearing a large yellow numeral '5'. The municipal arms of Boppard — a black eagle on a shield — appear at upper left, flanked by the serial number. The denomination 'Fünf Millionen Mark' is rendered in a large blackletter typeface across the centre against a horizontal yellow-ochre underprint band, with the issuing authority text above and redemption conditions below in smaller letterpress text. An applied blue official circular stamp of the city is struck over the lower centre, and the note is dated Boppard, 16 August 1923, with the facsimile signature of the Bürgermeister.

Boppard is a small Rhine town in what was then the Rhine Province of Prussia, and this note is classic Notgeld from the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when municipal authorities across Germany were forced to print their own emergency currency simply to meet payroll and conduct local commerce. By the time denominations reached seven figures, the Reichsmark was collapsing by the hour — the 5,000,000 Mark figure printed here would have represented a meaningful but rapidly depreciating sum for only days, perhaps less.

The single security feature is an official municipal stamp, which tells you something about the speed and desperation of production. The signature is given as H. Noll signing "i.V." — in Vertretung, meaning in deputized authority for the Bürgermeister — a routine administrative detail that nonetheless places a specific civil servant at the moment of issue.
