Stollberg's Amtshauptmannschaft — a district administrative authority in the Erzgebirge region of Saxony — issued this note during the peak of the 1923 hyperinflation, when municipal and district bodies across Germany were authorized to produce Notgeld simply to keep wages and commerce moving. By the time five-million-mark denominations were being printed at this level, the Reichsbank's own output was already insufficient to meet daily demand.
The watermarked paper is worth noting: at this denomination tier, many comparable Notgeld issuers cut costs entirely, using plain stock. That Stollberg retained it suggests the paper was sourced before supply chains deteriorated further.
