The Landkreis Wiesbaden — the rural district surrounding the city proper — issued this note independently of the city's own emergency currency during the hyperinflationary peak of 1923. District-level Notgeld at the five-million Mark denomination reflects conditions in late summer to early autumn of that year, when the Reichsmark was losing value faster than notes could be printed and distributed through normal banking channels. Local administrative bodies across Germany stepped into the vacuum, issuing their own paper to keep commerce and wages moving.

District committee issues are generally less studied than municipal ones, and print runs were often small — survival rates vary considerably depending on whether stocks were redeemed and pulped or simply abandoned when the Rentenmark stabilization made them worthless overnight in November 1923.
