Pößneck's leather notgeld sits at the extreme end of Weimar-era emergency currency experimentation. During the hyperinflation peak of 1923, dozens of German municipalities issued notgeld on unconventional materials — silk, linen, aluminium foil, velvet — partly from genuine paper shortages, partly as a calculated move to attract collector demand and generate hard income for cash-strapped towns. Pößneck, a small Thuringian center with a long tradition in leather goods manufacturing, had the industrial logic to back the choice of substrate.
Printed locally by the Stadtdruckerei C. & O. Vogel, the five-million-mark denomination reflects the frantic pace of monetary collapse — a figure that would have seemed absurd eighteen months earlier.
