Weissenburg in Bayern was among hundreds of German municipalities that issued their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark collapsed so rapidly that local authorities could not wait for centrally printed notes to arrive. The Stadtkasse — the municipal treasury, not a bank — issued this note directly, a legally tolerated but structurally improvised measure. Braun & Elbel were a local printing firm; at five million marks, this denomination reflects the summer-to-autumn spiral when face values were doubling within days.
