Wetzlar's municipal treasury issued this note during the hyperinflation peak of summer 1923, when local authorities across Germany were authorized to produce emergency currency — Notgeld — to compensate for the chronic shortage of usable Reichsbank notes. At five million Mark, this denomination would have been unremarkable for only a matter of weeks before further inflation rendered it effectively worthless.

Scharfes Druckereien was a local Wetzlar press, which accounts for the modest production quality typical of municipally contracted emergency issues. The city is better known internationally as the home of the Leitz optical works — the Leica camera connection — but that industry offered no insulation from the monetary collapse engulfing the rest of the country.
