| Obverse description | The left portion of the note carries a tall ornate letterpress vignette in black, arranged in three registers: the uppermost shows a horse-drawn harvesting machine at work in a field, the central register bears the interlaced monogram 'JB' within a laurel wreath and decorative cartouche, and the lower register depicts a farmer ploughing with a two-horse team. The right portion is set against a guilloche underprint in pale green and blue, with the denomination 'Fünf Milliarden Mark' in large Gothic blackletter script; an oval red issuer's stamp appears in the upper right corner. A manuscript ink signature is placed centrally below the issuer's name, and the full text of the redemption conditions is rendered in small letterpress type. |

J. Bautz A.-G. was an agricultural machinery manufacturer in Saulgau — not a bank, not a municipal authority. In late 1923, as Reichsmark hyperinflation made official currency functionally useless before it could even be spent, hundreds of German industrial firms began printing their own emergency money to pay workers on payday. Bautz's 5,000,000,000 Mark note is a product of that collapse: a factory payroll instrument, locally printed by Gebr. Edel, and redeemable only within whatever commercial network the company could sustain.
Notgeld of this type was typically voided within weeks of issue once the Rentenmark stabilization took hold in November 1923.
