| Obverse description | Printed in dark olive-green letterpress on plain paper, the note is enclosed within a guilloche border of interlocking zigzag ornament; a large underprint numeral '5' occupies the central field, overlaid by the bold Gothic denomination 'FÜNF MILLIARDEN MARK'. The upper register bears the issuing authority legend 'AUSHILFSSCHEIN DER FREIEN UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG' with a red serial prefix letter and black serial number at upper right, while the lower portion carries the place-and-date line 'HAMBURG, DEN 15. Hamburg's Finanzdeputation was one of dozens of municipal and regional authorities that issued emergency high-denomination notes during the hyperinflation spiral of late 1923, when the Reichsbank could not produce currency fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time five-billion-mark notes were necessary, a single US dollar was worth hundreds of millions of marks — and climbing daily.
H. O. Persiehl was a Hamburg-based commercial printer pressed into notgeld production alongside the city's finance administration. Local printing on local paper meant quality varied considerably across the series; foxing and toning are common on surviving examples due to the poor-grade stock used under wartime and postwar supply constraints that persisted into 1923.
