| Obverse description | The face is dominated by a bold letterpress denomination legend in three lines — FÜNF / MILLIARDEN / MARK — set in a decorative Gothic typeface that fills the upper two-thirds of the note. Two circular official seals of the City of Dortmund, each bearing a heraldic eagle with the legend SIEGEL DER STADT DORTMUND, are placed at the left and right centre margins. Below the denomination, a multi-line text in Kurrent script names the paying municipal and district treasuries of Dortmund and Hörde, the place and date of issue (Dortmund, 15 Oktober 1923), the authorising body Der Magistrat der Stadt Dortmund, two manuscript signatures, and a red serial number at the lower right; a pale guilloche underprint covers the entire field. |

One of dozens of municipal Notgeld issues pushed out during the hyperinflation peak of late 1923, this note reflects the collapse of the Reichsbank's capacity to supply adequate currency fast enough. Dortmund's Magistrat, like hundreds of other local authorities, filled the gap with emergency paper covering not just the city but the surrounding Landkreise — an administrative reach that was unusual for purely municipal issues.
Five billion marks. By November 1923, that would not have bought a postage stamp.
