The Government of South Haiti was a short-lived separatist administration under Sylvain Salnave's opponents during the civil conflict of 1867–1869. When Salnave, who controlled Port-au-Prince and declared himself president, faced armed resistance from the "Cacos" in the north and republican forces in the south, the southern faction issued its own emergency paper currency to fund military operations — this 48 Gourdes note among them.
The 48 Gourdes denomination is peculiar. It has no obvious parallel in standard Haitian monetary practice and likely reflects a specific debt obligation or troop payment calculation rather than a conventional currency unit. Salnave was captured and executed in January 1870.
