Additional information

Paraguay's 1972 Olympic gold series was issued under the Stroessner dictatorship, which used high-profile commemorative coinage almost entirely as a foreign currency earner rather than for domestic circulation. These pieces were sold internationally through coin dealers and never meaningfully entered Paraguayan commerce. The Munich Games themselves were, of course, permanently marked by the September massacre of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches — an event that nearly cancelled the remaining competition.
