Paraguay's 1973 gold series commemorating pre-Columbian cultures was issued under Alfredo Stroessner's dictatorship, part of a broader program of prestige coinage produced almost exclusively for export and collector sale rather than domestic circulation. The Huasteca were a Gulf Coast people whose cultural sphere peaked roughly between 900 and 1200 AD, geographically remote from Paraguay by thousands of kilometers — the connection to the issuing nation is purely numismatic convention, not historical.
