| Obverse description | Facing bust of Pope John Paul II in three-quarter left profile, wearing papal vestments, set within the stainless steel centre. To the right of the effigy, a small depiction of a four-wheel-drive vehicle appears in the field. An inscribed quotation in French reads: «L'Afrique se souvient de Toi, Jean-Paul II», with the engraver's initials 'AM' below.
