Cambrai's 1997 euro local currency issue was part of the pre-EMU "euro city" experiment, in which French municipalities issued their own exchange tokens between 1996 and 2002 to familiarize the public with the euro concept ahead of monetary union. Cambrai's participation carried particular historical irony: the city is best remembered for the 1529 Ladies' Peace, negotiated there between Louise of Savoy and Margaret of Austria, and for a 1917 tank battle that permanently altered modern warfare doctrine.
