Reverse description The reverse of the host coin displays the Portuguese royal arms: a crowned shield bearing the five quinas (escutcheons) of Portugal arranged in a cross, each containing five bezants, surrounded by a border of castles, all within a beaded circle. The royal legend surrounds the shield along the outer rim, identifying the issuing monarch of the original host coin, which varies according to the specific piece revalidated. The crowned shield is rendered in the hammered style typical of Portuguese gold coinage of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The legends are partially obscured or doubled where the dies of successive reigns overlap. The field retains the characteristic granular texture of hammered gold.
