| Obverse description | A square klippe planchet with clipped corners, struck in silver as a siege emergency issue. The central field displays the arms of the city of Kampen flanking the denomination expressed as '4Z ST' (42 Stuivers). The Latin motto EXTREMVM SVBSIDIVM ('last resort') appears in the legend above, referencing the desperate circumstances of the siege. The city name CAMPEN and the date 1578 are inscribed below the shield. The entire design is executed in the rudimentary hammered style characteristic of siege coinage, with an uneven, roughly finished field surface. |

Kampen struck siege coinage in 1578 under pressure from Spanish forces operating in the broader Eighty Years' War campaign across the IJssel region. Like most noodgeld of this period, the pieces were produced from whatever silver the city could requisition — plate, ecclesiastical objects, and bullion reserves — which accounts for the variable metal quality seen across surviving specimens.
The 42-stuiver denomination is an odd one, calculated to match the intrinsic silver value of the blank rather than conform to any standard monetary unit. Delmonte S#210 distinguishes at least one die variety within this issue.
