Obverse description Left-facing bust of Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous wearing a flat cap, rendered in high relief on a rectangular plaquette. The Latin motto VERB. DNI. MANET. IN. AETERNUM appears in the lower left field, the birth date 13. NOV. 1504 at upper left, and the year 1904 along the right edge. The engraver's signature DR. DANIEL GREINER is inscribed vertically along the right margin, with the identification legend PHILIPP. DER. GROSSMÜTIGE LANDGRAF. ZU. HESSEN in a raised panel along the lower border.

Reverse description A fully armoured knight on horseback facing left, holding a lance upright and with a sword at his side, rendered in high relief. The Hessian shield bearing a lion rampant appears in the upper right field. The Latin motto SI DEVS NOBIS CVM QVIS CONTRA NOS? is inscribed in the field below the horse, and the lower border panel bears the dedication legend of the Historical Society for the Grand Duchy of Hesse, dated 13 November 1904. The engraver's signature DR. DANIEL GREINER appears vertically along the left margin.
