| Obverse description | Central device features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants, set within a bordure of castles — all surmounted by an ornate royal crown with elaborate foliate finials. The denomination '4000' appears in the left field. The circular Latin legend reads around the periphery, interrupted by small pellet separators. The design is struck in high relief with bold, well-defined devices characteristic of early 18th-century Portuguese colonial milled coinage. |
