Additional information

José I's reign is inseparable from the figure of the Marquis of Pombal, who effectively ran Portugal after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed roughly a third of the capital. The reconstruction effort demanded fiscal coherence, and the mint's output during this period reflects that administrative grip — Pombal reorganized Portuguese colonial trade monopolies in part to stabilize gold flow from Brazil, which fed directly into Lisbon's coinage supply.

The proliferation of KM and Bentes reference numbers across this type reflects genuine die variation accumulated over a 26-year span, not mere cataloging convention.
