Additional information

João V's Brazilian gold coinage of the 1730s emerged directly from the Minas Gerais gold rush, which had transformed Portugal's fiscal position so dramatically that the Crown established the Rio de Janeiro mint in 1702 specifically to process colonial output before it could be smuggled. The small 400 réis denomination served local retail transactions in a colony where gold dust had previously functioned as the de facto currency.

The Bentes reference number places this squarely within a series notorious for die variation and inconsistent planchet preparation at Rio — distinguishing it from contemporaneous Bahia mint output requires attention to the mintmark.
