Obverse description Within the field, two laurel branches are crossed and intertwined, framing the royal name IOAN V in bold capital letters at centre, with the numeral V positioned below and separated by rosette stops. A royal crown surmounts the design above the legend. The denomination numeral 400 appears at the base of the field, between the tips of the crossed branches. The whole composition is enclosed within a reeded border.

Reverse description At centre, the Cross of the Order of Christ is depicted in its characteristic formée style, with the four quadrants each bearing the letter R — the mint mark for Rio de Janeiro — arranged symmetrically around the cross arms. The date 1730 appears in the upper portion of the surrounding circular legend. The full Latin motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES encircles the design, interrupted by the date at top. The composition is framed by a reeded border consistent with the milled production technique.
