Obverse description Crowned Portuguese royal shield of arms occupying the central field, flanked by the mintmark letters G and A (for Goa) to the left and right respectively. The shield displays the traditional quartered arms of Portugal with bezants, surmounted by a royal crown. The entire design is set within a beaded border. The hammered flan gives the coin a characteristically irregular outline.
