The Czech Lion series, produced by the Czech Mint for Niue, has pushed the boundaries of what a legal-tender coin can physically be — the 5-kilogram format exists primarily as a collector object with essentially no circulation history or monetary function. Niue's arrangement with the Czech Mint, formalized through a long-running licensing agreement, has made the small Pacific island nation one of the more prolific issuers of large-format European-themed bullion and numismatic pieces.
At 165 mm across, striking uniform relief across the full diameter requires extraordinary die pressure and careful annealing of the planchet.
