Issued to mark the UN Habitat II conference held in Istanbul in June 1996, one of the largest UN summits of the decade with delegations from 171 countries. By that year, Turkey's inflation rate was running above 80%, making a 400,000 lira face value — which sounds extraordinary — roughly equivalent to a few US dollars at the time of striking.
