| Obverse description | The obverse features a central elongated Neolithic figurine from Çatalhöyük rendered in high relief, flanked by two stylized decorated artefacts — a masked face plaque to the left and a star-shaped ornamental object to the right — all set against a mirror-polished field. Surrounding these central motifs are multiple incuse hand-print impressions evoking prehistoric cave art. The circular legend 'TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ' arcs along the upper rim in Latin script, while the denomination '40 YTL' and the date '2008' appear in the lower exergue, separated by a small mint mark. |

| Additional information |
Çatalhöyük, the Neolithic settlement in south-central Anatolia occupied roughly 7500–5700 BCE, was excavated by James Mellaart beginning in 1961 and immediately upended assumptions about early urban organization — the site showed dense, mudbrick construction with no streets, residents entering homes through roof openings. Its inclusion in a Turkish commemorative series reflects the site's 2012 UNESCO listing, though this coin predates that recognition by four years, issued when Çatalhöyük was still a candidate site under active re-excavation by a Cambridge-led team.
