Additional information

Ahmed Yesevi was a 12th-century Turkic Sufi poet whose shrine in Turkestan — now southern Kazakhstan — was rebuilt by Timur in the 1390s as a deliberate act of political legitimacy. Turkey's interest in commemorating him reflects the pan-Turkic cultural diplomacy that accelerated after 1991, when the dissolution of the Soviet Union reopened ties between Ankara and the Turkic republics of Central Asia.

The "Yeni Lira" denomination places this firmly in the 2005–2009 window, when Turkey had redenominated to shed six zeros from the lira following the catastrophic inflation of the preceding decades.
