Woerden struck this piece under emergency authority during the early years of the Dutch Revolt, when the normal supply of coin from Habsburg mints had collapsed and local authorities across Holland were improvising monetary solutions to pay troops and conduct trade. The city's right to strike was provisional at best — Holland's provincial estates tolerated these municipal issues out of necessity rather than legal principle.
The HPM classification and Gelder cross-reference place this among the documented Woerden siege or quasi-siege coinage, a group notorious for wide weight variation between dies. At 31.3g this example sits toward the heavier end of known specimens for the type.
