| Obverse description | Crowned city arms of Amsterdam applied as a counterstamp to the field, accompanied above by a counterstamp depicting a solder vase (soldeerketel), the civic symbol used to authenticate this siege issue. The date 1578 and denomination XL in Roman numerals are stamped below the arms. The surface bears the characteristic rough, improvised appearance typical of wartime klippe emergency coinage, with all devices applied by hand stamp rather than die striking. |
