Breda fell under siege by Spanish forces in 1576–1577 during the early phases of the Eighty Years' War, and the city's emergency coinage was struck from whatever silver could be commandeered — plate, ecclesiastical objects, and private holdings melted under municipal authority. Siege coins of this period are rarely well-documented in their precise production circumstances, and the Breda issues are no exception.
Delmonte S#181 is among the heavier denominations from this siege, which correlates with the 40-stiver valuation intended to cover larger transactions when normal supply chains had collapsed entirely.
