Obverse description Draped laureate bust of James VII (James II of England) facing right, wearing a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon, with long flowing curled hair falling to the shoulders. The denomination numeral '40' appears in the lower field below the truncation. The encircling Latin legend reads IACOBUS · II · DEI · GRATIA · and is separated from the coin's milled border by a plain field. The portrait is rendered in the late Stuart Baroque style characteristic of Scottish milled coinage of the period.
