The ORI (Oeang Republik Indonesia) was the currency issued by the revolutionary government during the Indonesian National Revolution, operating in parallel — and in direct competition — with the Dutch-backed currencies used in colonial-controlled territories. By 1948, the Republic was under severe economic and military pressure, with the Dutch launching their second major military offensive that December. Notes like this 40 Rupiah denomination were printed under difficult wartime conditions with limited infrastructure.

The 40 Rupiah face value is an oddity — not a denomination that appears in most conventional series, which makes the ORI IV issues collectible for that reason alone.
