Issued to mark four decades of Afghan refugee presence in Pakistan — one of the longest-running and largest refugee situations in modern history, dating to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. At its peak, Pakistan hosted over three million registered Afghan refugees, a burden that reshaped entire urban districts in Peshawar and Quetta.
Nordic Gold, the copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy developed in the early 1990s and best known from Euro coinage, sees relatively rare use in Pakistani commemorative issues.
