| Obverse description | The obverse displays the Imperial arms of Brazil at center: a crowned escutcheon bearing a celestial sphere crossed by a diagonal band and encircled by a ring of stars, all set within a rectangular shield surmounted by the Imperial crown. The shield is flanked on either side by symmetrical laurel branches tied at the base, forming a wreath frame. The denomination legend '40 Rs.' appears in bold raised letters along the upper arc of the field, with a small floral ornament separating the two elements. The entire design is enclosed within a finely beaded border. |
