Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King João VI facing right, with long curled hair crowned by a floral wreath, dominating the central field. The peripheral Latin legend JOANNES VI D.G. PORT. BR. ET. ALG. R. encircles the effigy, with the date 1822 struck in the exergue of the host Portuguese pataco produced at the Lisbon Mint. A small punched royal crown countermark — applied in 1854 under Pedro V to authorize circulation in São Tomé and Príncipe — is impressed on the lower left of the bust. A toothed border frames the entire obverse.

Obverse lettering JOANNES VI D.G. PORT. BR. ET. ALG. R.
Reverse description The central device presents the Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the quinas and a bordure of castles — superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the whole surmounted by a royal crown. The abbreviated Latin legend UTIL. PUBLICA. is distributed around the periphery flanking the central device. The numeral 40, denoting the denomination in réis, appears in the lower exergue beneath the armillary sphere. A toothed border frames the entire reverse, consistent with early nineteenth-century Portuguese colonial minting practice at the Lisbon Mint.
