Reverse description Plain field enclosed by a beaded outer border, with a circular rope-pattern inner border enclosing the central inscriptions. Within the inner circle, the text 'ENSAIO' appears in the upper portion above a small ornament, followed by 'MONETARIO' across the centre, a second small ornament, and the date '1863' below. The peripheral legend, reading clockwise from the base, states the full imperial title of Pedro II of Brazil: 'PETRUS II D.G. CONST. IMP. ET PERP. BRAS. DEF.' A small floral ornament appears at the bottom of the legend, separating the beginning and end of the inscription.

Additional information

Brazil's 1863 nickel pattern series was part of a broader government investigation into replacing the country's debased copper coinage with more durable base-metal alternatives. Nickel was being adopted experimentally by several European mints at the time, and Brazilian monetary authorities were watching closely. Nothing came of it — copper remained the medium for small change for years afterward.

KM#Pn110 is one of several denomination patterns struck that year, making survivors almost certainly cabinet pieces that never approached circulation.
