Obverse description Bare-headed, bearded effigy of Emperor Pedro II facing right, rendered in high relief with finely engraved hair and flowing beard. The truncation of the bust is set within an incuse square panel, with the engraver's initials E.S.R.C. inscribed below. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, separated from the effigy by a beaded inner border. The date is placed at the bottom of the field between two ornamental stops.

Reverse description The imperial coat of arms of Brazil occupies the central field, depicting a shield bearing a celestial sphere encircled by a ring of nineteen stars, surmounted by the imperial crown. The shield is of the armorial type with a hatched background, and the overall composition fills the field between the denomination numerals. The value '40' appears to the left of the shield and 'Rs.' to the right, all enclosed within a beaded border.
