Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle surmounted by a royal crown, the denomination expressed as 'XL' in large characters is flanked on either side by floral ornaments. The date appears below the denomination within the same beaded circle. The royal legend encircles the entire design, identifying the issuing monarch. The overall composition is typical of Portuguese colonial copper coinage of the mid-eighteenth century, with a simple but hierarchically organized field.
