Obverse description Applied rectangular countermark depicting the Portuguese royal shield (arms of Portugal), struck in incuse over the host coin's obverse. The host coin bears a circular legend reading PETRVS . II . D . G . P . REX . around the inner field, with a beaded border visible along the coin's periphery. The countermark was applied by Portuguese colonial authorities to validate the Brazilian 40 Réis for circulation in Angola.
