The Magyar Királyi Állami Jegyintézet was a transitional institution, created after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Bank to manage Hungary's currency during the chaotic interwar stabilization period. This provisional 40 Pengő note is a product of that awkwardness — the Pengő was not officially adopted until 1927, which means notes denominated in it were circulating, or being prepared, before the currency they represented had full legal standing.

The 40 Pengő denomination itself is an oddity. It does not fit the standard progression of denominations and almost certainly reflects a conversion bridge from korona-era values rather than a considered monetary unit.
